Sea, Sand & Fire

Imagine an evening event overlooking the Montague Heritage River held outdoors around a rustic campfire while enjoying local musicians, local seafaring stories, Roma food, and some of PEI's best story tellers. Sea, Sand & Fire is happening: and it's best describes as a re-creation of an authentic experience from the 1730s.

After a hard day's work, Roma loved to party. After all, on his first voyage to PEI in 1732, one of his three ships was loaded with wine and whiskey! At Sea,Sand & Fire, we will gather by the outdoor fire to taste Roma's hearty bread and in honour of Roma, the Site is licensed to serve liquor during events. A cash bar will be available from licensed servers.

Around the fire, attendees will hear compelling stories about life at sea and how Atlantic Canada was built on the valuable cod trade (not on the fur trade as many believe).

While listening to Roma's colourful past through story and music, participants will also get the chance to taste the food of Roma's time.

Storytelling will illuminate tales of the vicious rivalries, thefts in the dead of night, and devastating fires that occurred at Roma, as well as details surrounding the lives of the enslaved peoples that resided at the settlement.

Guests will learn about the lasting impacts that Jean Pierre Roma and his settlers left upon the Island which can still be found today - such as their many descendants who still live in the area and roads that they carved out of the wilderness which are still used! The Great Escape Festival, August 7 & 14 goes into more detail about the "Life & Times" of the settlement.

There will be demonstrations and guests will be invited to try their hand at some musical instruments of Roma's time. This program will stimulate all 5 senses - sight, sound, smell, taste & touch.
