Celebrating Our Pioneers
Jean Pierre Roma Meets A.A. Macdonald
They were both dreamers. They lived in different centuries. And we, as Islanders and Canadians, owe them a special celebration. And that is what we will do through the drama that brings them together during the annual Roma Festival- Celebrating Three Rivers, Saluting our Pioneers, August 8th, 9th and 10th.
Both their stories arise from Brudenell Point, a.k.a Roma Point, the site of the present day Jean Pierre Roma National Historic Site in the Three Rivers area, Kings County, Prince Edward Island. On an island of many beautiful natural settings the coastal panorama offered at Roma Point is one of the stand-out experiences.
Under the French imperial regime Jean Pierre Roma established a commercial colony at the site in 1732 and prospered there until 1745 when it was raided and destroyed by a party of New Englanders sailing under the British flag. Now a rebuilt and re-animated part of the old Roma settlement, the site is one of the oldest designated national historic sites in Canada.
Almost a century after Roma, in 1829, Andrew Archibald (A.A.) Macdonald was born at Brudenell Point into a family of Scottish immigrants that would dominate the economic life of central Kings County for decades. Like Roma before them, they established a commercial enterprise on the site, the Macdonald Brothers store catering to the farming and fishing clientele of the Three Rivers area. A.A. would advance a political career that would see him become a Member of the Legislative Assembly, a proponent of land reform, an Island delegate to the Charlottetown Conference in 1864, a Father of Confederation, a Canadian Senator, and Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island.
Dennis Trainor, an Island performer who has gained attention with the homegrown comedy Troupe Sketch 22 and more recently with the critically acclaimed web-series Just Passing Through, is pleased as could be to be returning to reprise the role of 'Jean Pierre Roma' for 2014. For the fifth Roma Pioneer Festival, Board director Gordon Cobb antagonizes Monsieur Roma as Isle St. Jean colonial administrator 'Robert Poitiers Dubuisson '. Gordon is a federal public servant, an award winning screenplay writer, and a veteran of Island stage and film including most recently as ' Reverend Jeremiah Brown' in ACT's April 2014 production of Inherit the Wind and 'Officer Dougie' in the critically acclaimed web series, Just Passing Through.
For the Saturday of the Festival, the role of Father of Confederation 'A.A. Macdonald' will be played by East Point native and A.A. look-alike Leo Cheverie, UPEI library technician, public servant and social activist. Leo has performed with the UPEI Theatre Society and is very familiar with many elements of Prince Edward Island history including the life and career of Father of Confederation A.A. MacDonald.
For the Sunday of the Festival, the role of 'A.A. Macdonald' will be played by provincial public servant, actor, author and media personality Andrew Sprague. Andrew currently works as Communications Officer for the PEI Department of Tourism and Culture and had been a CBC PEI radio broadcaster for many years. He performed for all seven seasons in the comedy troupe Sketch 22 and is the author of Prince Edward Island Tastes, an Island foodie book.
The drama of these historical figures is complemented at the Festival by historical presentations including the story of A.A. Macdonald by Dr. Edward MacDonald on Saturday and French and Acadian cultural traditions of Isle St. Jean by Georges Arsenault on Sunday. There will be numerous musical performances- Louise Arsenault & Hélène Bergeron, Roy Johnstone & Steve Sharratt, the Farrs, Jock Beck, and French and Scottish dance calling with Marion Copleston and Tony Reddin.
The Festival also includes other cultural activities including an exhilarating drama by Mi' kmaq Legends, the Cardigan Heritage Society Shipbuilding Display, 'Dance like it's 1740' with Marie LaVergne, the Native Council of PEI Drumming Group, bread making in the stone oven with Remi Boucher on Saturday and Robert Pendergast on Sunday, and the demonstrations of the cod fishery, birch broom making, yarn spinning, rug hooking, butter making, and blacksmithing. There will be a full food service with tasty fare from the past (with other modern choices), tea made from herbs in the garden, and authentic games, toys, and livestock for the amusement of the young ones.
And be sure to catch the reprise of last year's crowd pleasing Fashion Show followed by the 2014 celebration chocolate cake with our historical figures. In a year full of cultural celebrations inspired by the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference, the Roma Festival offers a truly distinctive and enjoyable bilingual heritage and entertainment experience for all ages.
